The theory of quantum gravitation, which is designed to unite the general relativity with the quantum field theory into one consistent theory, raises several major problems. The paper examines the limitations posed by general relativity on the efforts to create an ontological basis of the quantum theory of gravitation, which the latter ought to accept. It concerns mainly problems arising from relating the new field theory with the gravitational field in the general theory of relativity, the problems of the autonomy of the space-time with its gravitational masses, as well as the problems of the covariance of the physical equations in the theory of quantum gravitation equations, the former being the consequence of the principle of a general covariance of the general relativity equations.
