In the paper I firstly review attitudes that the founders of modern logic and analytical philosophy maintained towards modalitites, preferring logical or epistemical reduction, then I proceed to their contemporary metaphysical opponents who aspire to refine the newleibnizian ontology of possible worlds. I point out some unclarified assumptions in their „arguments\'\' to which – and to the philosophical analysis of possibility in general – I add a few final general critical remarks based on Wittgenstein-Carnapś conception of possibility as meaningfulness.
